Experience the meditative world of 'Illuminations', a generative audio-visual installation that explores themes of performance, presence, creativity, and community. Through the innovative use of technology and the Ethereum blockchain, 'Illuminations' offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience a generative meditation. Driven by current block number, hash, miner address and gas price to inform the layering of the ‘barcodes’ and accompanying aural ambience, this initial system moves between 324 possible combinations.

As you sit with the installation, you will encounter visually abstract 'barcodes' that represent the captured musical performances, layered and integrated with ambient soundscapes. By reading the Ethereum blockchain, 'Illuminations' creates an ever-evolving and immersive environment that invites visitors to explore the relationship between technology and a deeper human experience.

Illuminance I - XXXII is a series of ‘movie barcodes’ produced as digital collectibles (NFTs) by Mike St-Jean, while on tour as lighting designer with legendary and luminary artist Devin Townsend for his Lightwork European Tour, April - May 2023. Video of each 90 minute concert & light design was converted to 'barcodes', while 20 minutes of pre-show ambience performed each night by Townsend, was captured as two layers of stereo files, named 'cloud' & 'sub'.
Illuminations uses Javascript, Max, Ableton & Resolume, and reads the Ethereum blockchain in realtime to inform the combinations of audio & visual layers that make up the meditative canvas.
